The "Life Proof" Motorola Defy Reviewed

Motorola has launched the all new "Defy" phone. The phone is purpose built for toughness. It is water proof up to 1 meter and resists all the day to day spills of coffee or water. It's being called Life proof by Motorola but they were pretty quick to point out that the phone just offers a tad bit more protection from the elements and shouldn't be chucked at the wall for testing the Life proof claims. The phone conforms to the IP67 standards which is the reason for it being "Life proof".

The phone is finished in hard and durable plastics and the exposed screws on the back give it the tough look on the outside. It won't attract much attention because of its design but will turn heads due to the technology it offers. It measures a compact 59 x 107 x 13.4mm with its 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touch screen which offers 16 Million Colours and impressive screen resolution. Around the chassis of the phone you get the standard buttons which include a standby or power button and the volume control but sadly there is no dedicated button for the camera which will make it bit difficult for the photography buffs to just point and shoot.

You get a 3.5mm audio jack with a rubber cover for protection when the jack is not in use. Inside the Motorola Defy you get a 800 MHz processor and 512 Mb Ram with internal memory being a paltry 2 GB but you will be able to expand it via an external micro SD card. The camera on the Motorola Defy is a 5 Mega pixel beast but sadly it doesn't support HD video recording. It only supports 640 x 480 video recording. This puts it out of the league of the top phones like the Motorola Milestone 2. The Motorola Defy's 5 Mega Pixel camera comes with geo tagging, auto focus an LED supercap flash and image stabilizing technology.

At the bottom of the touch screen you get the normal touch sensitive buttons including ones for the menu and back. The Defy runs the Android 2.1 OS which does not have flash video integration and the snazziest menus but you get the most popular networking widget namely Motoblur. Motoblur collects all your updates from popular networking sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and shows them in a cloud on your home screen. The Motorola Defy has seven home screens to choose from and each of them can be personalized with all your favourite widgets and shortcuts.

This phone comes with the option of either SWYPE or QWERTY on screen keyboards which the user can select according to his own will. The Defy has HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR connectivity options. It is a Quad band phone which switches automatically between network bands. It also has all the sensors that we have come to expect from a modern day smart phone like a proximity sensor, accelerometer and light sensor. You also get Google maps which allow you to use your Defy as a GPS device.
